THAILAND TO USE VSAT TECHNOLOGY

SAN DIEGO-ComStream Corp. won a contract to supply its VSATPlus II technology to the Telephone Organization of Thailand for a large Time Division Multiple Access very small aperture terminal satellite rural telephony network.

Installation on the network began during the first quarter, and about 500 nodes have been installed. The network will have 22 regional gateways and more than 1,000 remote sites, making it the largest of its kind, said ComStream.

Coverage will include all of Thailand as well as Laos and Malaysia.

The VSATPlus II at the network’s regional gateway in Bangkok is equipped with ComStream’s StreamView network management system to manage and interface calls to Thailand’s public switched telephone network. This allows calls from the regional gateways to access the PSTN’s public services such as police and mobile telephone services.

At each remote site, a VSATPlus II terminal will be connected to three or more pay or standard telephones. The remote terminals transmit to the Thaicom II satellite, which then directs traffic to the specified address or closest gateway.
