Japanese giant Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. easily outstripped both its own revenues for 1995 and the 1996 revenues of second-ranked NEC Corp., whose own revenues last year were significantly higher than the prior year.
Matsushita reported revenues of nearly $63.2 billion, a whopping increase close to fivefold higher than 1995 when it posted just more than $9.4 billion.
NEC clocked in with almost $42 billion in revenues, a significant advance compared with the approximately $29 billion it reported in revenues for 1995.
Tellabs Inc. joined the ranks of major players in revenues for 1996, as did ADC Telecommunications Inc. and California Microwave Inc.
With a third-place finish, Motorola Inc. led among the major wireless infrastructure vendors, followed by Lucent Technologies Inc., L.M. Ericsson, Northern Telecom Ltd. and Nokia Corp.
