WTO NATIONS MAY COMPETE IN U.S. MSS

NEW YORK-The Federal Communications Commission adopted policies Nov. 25 that permit non-United States licensed satellites to provide services in this country.

As a result, the FCC said it expects new satellite providers to begin offering services in the United States early next year.

The agency said it expects its decision to promote competition in the domestic satellite services market that will provide benefits for American consumers in the form of lower prices, improved service quality and options.

With the adoption of these new orders, the commission said it, “has carried out the letter and spirit of commitments made by the [United States] in February … (when) the U.S. and 49 other nations made binding commitments in the World Trade Organization Agreement on Basic Telecommunications Services to open satellite markets to competition.”
