BELL CANADA STARTS WITH BANG IN CHINA

MONTREAL-More than 1,000 customers signed up on the first day of Bell Canada International’s launch of a new mobile cellular network Jinan, the capital of the Chinese province of Shandong.

The new network uses Global System for Mobile communications technology and builds on the existing BCI network, Yantai Bell, that operates in the Shandong city of Yantai.

BCI said it expects to launch similar services in the neighboring cities of Zibo and Weifang by the end of 1997. The four cities represent a market of 25 million, about 30 percent of the population of Shandong.

“This new service builds on our partnership with China Unicom in Yantai, and I am encouraged by the growth opportunities these operations present,” said Derek Burney, chairman, president and chief executive officer of BCI.
