AT&T VENTURE FAR EASTONE BEGINS DUAL-BAND IN TAIWAN

KIRKLAND, Wash.-AT&T Wireless Services Inc. announced that its joint venture in Taiwan, Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. Ltd., launched its dual-band wireless communications service in Taiwan.

The Global System for Mobile communications network is designed for integrated operation at both the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz frequency bands. Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation and Communication awarded Far EasTone two licenses to provide GSM digital service last January. The first was a nationwide GSM 1800 license, and the second was a GSM 900 license covering the northern region, which includes the capital city of Taipei. Service to Taiwan’s 23 million residents will be marketed under a co-brand of AT&T and Far EasTone. AT&T’s major partner in the venture is the Far Eastern Group. Other partners include Systex, Chiao Tung Bank, China Development Corp. and Cheung Hing Development Ltd.
