CENTURY REVENUES UP, PROFITS DOWN

NEW CANAAN, Conn.-Century Communications Inc. reported a net loss of $43.6 million during the fiscal 1998 second quarter ended Nov. 30, 1997, despite a 20.4-percent increase in revenue from $159 million in the 1997 second quarter to $191.4 million, the company announced.

The 60-cent per share loss compares with a loss of 25 cents per share, or $17.3 million, during the corresponding 1997 fiscal quarter.

Century’s 33-percent owned subsidiary, Centennial Cellular Corp., brought $59.1 million in revenue during the 1998 second quarter, representing a 67.2-percent increase from the $35,359 reported for the quarter ended Nov. 30, 1996.

For the six-month period ended in November, Century experienced a net loss of about $68.2 million and produced $372.1 million in revenue, compared with a $78.4 million net loss and $312 million in revenue for the corresponding 1997 period. Centennial contributed about $112 million in revenue for the first six months of fiscal 1998, which is an increase of 65.4 percent from the comparable 1997 six-month period.
