KIRKLAND, Wash.-A commercial transportation service that operates a fleet of 500 vehicles in metropolitan New York adopted AT&T PocketNet service as its dispatch and communications platform, announced AT&T Wireless Services Inc.
Business Class Transportation is switching from a voice radio system to a specialized application that uses AT&T Wireless’ wireless data network to dispatch assignments to drivers carrying PocketNet cellular phones. In addition, the system will track the performance and availability of each car in its fleet, said the company.
“Having our drivers carry PocketNet phones eliminates the need to install radio hardware in our cars, which will save close to $1,000 per unit,” said Emil Akman, president of Business Class Transportation. “We can forgo the considerable expense of maintaining a radio-frequency (network).”
The Brooklyn-based company said it also plans to use PocketNet service’s Internet access to provide passengers with train and flight schedules, travel directions and weather forecasts.
The three-year contract, which includes 200 PocketNet phones and wireless data connectivity service, is valued at more than $100,000, AT&T Wireless said.
