RICHARDSON, Texas-Ericsson Inc. demonstrated the capability of its local number portability database solution to provide range updates of up to 1,000 location routing number records and 2,000 global title translation types in one second or less, said the company.
Ericsson’s LNP database solution contains both the service control point database and the signal transfer point in a single platform. The combined platform enables carriers to implement advanced intelligent networking services within the LNP architecture, such as virtual private networks, prepaid calling cards, account card calling and enhanced toll-free calling.
The single-platform also gives carriers the ability to handle intermediate and final GTT in a single node, which means calls can be routed more directly to their ultimate destination. GTT allows ported numbers to retain features like caller ID, call waiting and call return.
While numerous industrywide requirement decisions are still underway, LNP may help relieve number exhaustion. Presently, each new service provider receives a range of numbers to assign, many of which remain unused, but are not available for other providers to assign.
With LNP, all the available numbers can be pooled and assigned to any provider, which delays the need for additional area codes. The capabilities of Ericsson’s LNP database solution will assist local service providers implementing number pooling, the company said.
“Ericsson’s range update capabilities are especially beneficial to service providers as they first implement LNP,” said Ron Dikhoff, executive vice president and general manager for Ericsson Network Systems. “Setting up the first subscribers in a parted rate center is much easier with the ability to update thousands of numbers at one time.”
