MURRAY HILL, N.J.-Advanced Radio Telecom Corp. and Lucent Technologies Inc. signed a letter of intent for Lucent to supply equipment and integrate Advanced Radio’s planned wireless broadband data network.
Under the agreement, Lucent will provide equipment and vendor financing valued at up to $200 million for the first phase of the network construction in Seattle and Washington, D.C., which will be followed by buildouts in an additional 10 cities, said the company. Lucent’s financing is contingent upon Advanced Radio raising additional capital and meeting certain performance objectives as the network buildouts progress.
In related news, Lucent last week closed on the acquisition of Hewlett-Packard Co.’s local multipoint distribution service wireless business. Lucent plans to launch a new wireless broadband networks division in Milpitas, Calif., which previously was part of HP’s video communications division. The WBN division will play a key role in the design, manufacture and deployment of Advanced Radio’s network, Lucent said.
Lucent will supply Advanced Radio integrated operating systems to include point-to-multipoint radios, the Lucent MX 1000 edge and GlobeView-2000 core asynchronous transfer mode switches, access concentrators, fiber and multiplexer systems and communications software products.
Lucent also committed to provide professional services and support integrating all network elements and offer network management services from its Network Reliability Center in Denver and its new NetCare data service center in St. Petersburg, Fla.
