SOFTWIRE INTRODUCES OBJECT-BASED SERVER TO WIRELESS

A California software company has introduced an object-based server that captures, processes and manages distributed events and transactions across disparate computer and network systems.

Softwire Corp. of Larkspur, Calif., already has installed the server, called ObjectSwitch, into Caribbean operator France Caraibe Mobile’s network, CS Telco in France and several North American carriers’ networks.

Softwire said increasing competition is forcing telecom companies to quickly develop and deploy new services to compete. ObjectSwitch allows carriers to implement new services in a short amount of time without modifying the network’s existing capabilities, said Doug Ehrenreich, vice president of marketing for Softwire. For instance, the ObjectSwitch server can translate the interface of a provisioning system into the interface of a billing system.

“Carriers can buy systems from different vendors and link them into ObjectSwitch, and they can talk to one another,” said Ehrenreich.

The beauty of the server, said Ehrenreich, is that it allows carriers to focus on designing new services it wants to offer customers rather than trying to make sure new applications are compatible with their infrastructure.

In addition telecom operators, equipment manufacturers and system integrators can tailor ObjectSwitch into complete end-to-end intelligent mediation platforms, bridging wireline, wireless and Internet networks. This will be key for carriers interested in delivering Internet service to wireless handsets. Today, applications that run on wireless networks cannot communicate with applications used over the Internet. ObjectSwitch allows the two different protocols to be modeled into one application service domain.
