SIERRA WIRELESS INTRODUCES DUAL-MODE WIRELESS DATA MODEM

LAS VEGAS-Sierra Wireless Inc. introduced a new type of wireless data modem at the International Wireless Communications Expo in Las Vegas last week that combines Circuit Switched Cellular and Cellular Digital Packet Data services.

The 3-watt modem allows transmission of CDPD protocol-based packets over circuit switched networks. This solves the problem of intermittent gaps in CDPD coverage by automatically switching to a circuit switched network when CDPD coverage is unavailable, even in the middle of data transmission.

“This is a breakthrough for cellular data customers,” said Andrew Harries, vice president of marketing at Sierra Wireless. “The MP215 combines high power and industrial strength with the ability to retain an IP packet connection throughout the cellular network.”

The main thrust of the product is that it maintains an IP connection all the while, regardless of transmission mode. “The switching takes place transparent to the application,” Harries said. “So you can send and receive packet data anywhere there is cellular service.”

Hughes Network Systems Inc. and Lucent Technologies Inc. developed the circuit switched CDPD technology, now offered by GTE Wireless Inc.

The MP215 includes the company’s WirelessExpert installation and configuration program and the Sierra Wireless Watcher, which provides signal and status monitoring compatible with Windows 95 applications. The modem also is designed to be highly rugged, for use in the transportation industries.

While the product is in field trials, Sierra Wireless said the modem will be available for shipment in June.

Sierra Wireless also introduced the MP200 Integrated Global Positioning System modem aimed at the fleet management industry.
