BEIJING-The Chinese Ministry of Information Industry 22 April announced the first domestically designed and manufactured digital mobile telecommunications equipment has been connected to the local network in Shanghai. The ministry added that China now is one of the few countries capable of producing this equipment, thereby halting the foreign domination of its mobile telecommunications equipment business.
Up to now, all such equipment was manufactured either by wholly foreign-owned enterprises, Sino-foreign joint ventures or under license from a foreign company. The GSM 1800 base station now being used in Shanghai was designed by the Number 1 Research Institute, which is affiliated with the Telecommunications Science and Technology Research Academy, and is being manufactured by the Shanghai Datang Mobile Communications Equipment Co.
