LGIC, VLSI JOIN GROUP TESTING SNAPTRACK E911

SAN JOSE, Calif.-LG Information and Communications Ltd. will develop prototype handsets for widespread testing of SnapTrack’s enhanced 911 solution, which is designed to meet the Federal Communications Commission mandate for wireless E-911 location services, said SnapTrack.

LGIC joined seven Code Division Multiple Access wireless carriers-AirTouch Communications Inc., GTE Wireless, Ameritech Cellular & Paging, PrimeCo Personal Communications L.P., U S West Wireless, Bell Mobility and Sprint Spectrum L.P. -to conduct the SnapTrack field trials.

VLSI Technology Inc., a system-level, custom integrated circuit provider, also announced that it would conduct field trials of SnapTrack Inc.’s location-determination technology.

VLSI’s participation is significant because a major component of SnapTrack’s cellular-aided Global Positioning System technology uses the handset’s own digital signal processor chip, said SnapTrack.

SnapTrack’s wireless location solution, mostly comprised of software added to the handset’s DSP chip, is designed to fulfill the Federal Communications Commission’s mandate for enhanced 911 location services.
