OTTAWA, Canada-Lucent Technologies Inc. said it has developed a way to predict wireless signal strengths inside buildings and in downtown areas that the company says is faster and more accurate than existing systems.
The development is the latest enhancement to its Wireless System Engineering software package the company presented at the 48th Annual Vehicular Technology conference in Canada. Lucent said the new version of WiSE is 10 to 1,000 times faster than previous versions.
WiSE is used to determine how many base stations are needed and where they should be placed. Rather than a trial-and-error approach, Lucent said WiSE allows carriers to place base stations more efficiently so that fewer base station antennas are needed for maximum coverage and sound quality.
