PHS FORUM CREATED TO PROMOTE TECHNOLOGY IN THE AMERICAS

SINGAPORE-Several wireless companies have formed the PHS Forum in an effort to promote the benefits of Personal Handyphone System technology in the Americas.

Charter members ADC Wireless Systems, ArrayComm Inc., Kyocera Corp., Market Tel 48 C.A., Nichimen, Nippon Motorola, UTStarcom and Zetwx all have PHS contracts and field trials underway in various South, Central or North American countries.

The new group, which has the full endorsement of the PHS MoU Group, was announced at the CommunicAsia ’98 show held last week in Singapore.

Recent reports that PHS subscriber numbers experienced a slowdown at the end of last year were countered by the PHS MoU Group, which said subscriber numbers and use continue to grow in Japan, and that programs to introduce the technology elsewhere are continuing.

“The PHS Forum of the Americas and the PHS MoU Group will work together to form a unified front in the face of the adverse publicity,” said Masaaki Hirose, secretariat of the PHS MoU Group.

The forum plans to meet on a regular basis to coordinate efforts related to PHS standards definition and to determine approaches to regulatory issues and spectrum allocation.
