Phoenix Wireless Group
Phoenix Wireless Group announced several new appointments. Christopher Bear was named director of engineering. He joins the company from AccessLine Technologies Inc., where he was director of product development. Previously, he was lead manager of CDMA open interfaces for Northern Telecom Inc.
Kenneth Ible was hired as director of operations for Phoenix Wireless Group Inc. of Maitland, Fla. He comes to Phoenix from Motorola Inc., where he was engineering/operations manager in Fort Lauderdale. In his new position, Ible will head up a team that will develop and manage product delivery processes, said Phoenix. Prior to working with Motorola, Ible was technical operations manager for Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems in Chicago.
Phoenix appointed Gerald Thomas vice president of products. Previously, Thomas was engineering operations manager for Motorola Inc., and the company’s senior resource manager prior to that. Before working with Motorola, Thomas was manager of breakthrough projects for AT&T Bell Laboratories. In total, he brings to Phoenix 20 years of industry experience, said the company.
PageNet
Dallas-based Paging Network Inc. said Ethan Knowlden joined the company as corporate counsel, responsible for corporate and securities compliance. Knowlden also is in charge of providing legal support for PageNet’s strategic, national account and vendor relationships, said the company. Previously, Knowlden was a senior associate with Gardere & Wynne L.L.P., a law firm that specializes in securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions and general corporate matters. Knowlden also spent four years working as a legal associate with Hughes & Luce L.L.P.
PCS One
PCS One, a joint venture of D&E Communications and Omnipoint Corp., named Bob Murphy vice president of sales and marketing for the company’s operations in a 10-county region of Pennsylvania. He is responsible for marketing and sales activities in the region and developing a comprehensive distribution network, said the company. Most recently, Murphy was general manager for Centennial Wireless, where he operated the company’s wireless systems in Indiana and Ohio. He also has directed and managed marketing and sales for United States Cellular Corp., Comcast Cellular Communications Inc. and East Caribbean Cellular.
Standard Telecom America
Won Jun An, going by the name Charles An, was appointed president and chief executive officer of Standard Telecom America Inc. He has spent the last six year as managing director of Standard Telecom Co. Ltd., STA’s parent company based in Seoul, South Korea. An replaces Ike Kim, who died in February. STA makes the Nixxo brand of pagers.
Nextel Communications
The Overland Park, Kan., office of Nextel Communications Inc. named Randall Burns general manager responsible for overseeing operations, sales, administration and management in the Overland Park office. He comes to Nextel from American Paging Inc. (now part of TSR Wireless L.L.C.), where he was the Western regional manager. Prior to American, he was a district sales manager for AT&T Wireless Services Inc. and vice president and manger of the Southwest region for Datatel Inc.
ArrayComm
ArrayComm Inc. of San Jose, Calif., named two new positions. Michael Callahan was appointed director of operations, responsible for managing all supply-chain operations for ArrayComm’s line of wireless telecommunications products. He will work closely with the company’s internal divisions to build and maintain solid manufacturing processes. He also will manage key purchasing and vendor relationships, said ArrayComm. Previously, Callahan was manager at high-tech consulting firm Pittiglio Rabin Todd & McGrath, where he specialized in supply-chain implementation and product development for large wireless and other high-tech companies. Callahan also worked in quality and manufacturing engineering positions with Beckman Industrial Technologies and LH Research.
David Hodges was named vice president and general counsel for ArrayComm. He is the company’s first in-house attorney and will be responsible for legal and intellectual property-related issues. ArrayComm’s founder and chairman, Marty Cooper, said Hodges possesses high-tech business expertise. Most recently, Hodges was associate general counsel for Network Equipment Technologies, a supplier of multiservice backbone networks. Previously he was a partner in a large San Francisco and Silicon Valley-based law firm. In addition to his law degree, Hodges holds a bachelor of science degree in physics.
Bell Atlantic Mobile
Roger Tang was named regional vice president for Bell Atlantic Mobile in Pittsburgh, from where he will direct operations throughout southwestern Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Tang was promoted from his previous position as executive director of store sales and operations in Bell Atlantic’s Northeast region. Tang also has held a number of finance and operations positions in Bell Atlantic Mobile’s Southeast region. He began his career in the wireless industry 10 years ago when he joined MetroMobile of Greenville, S.C., which merged with Bell Atlantic Mobile in 1992.
