CANADA

Rogers Cantel announced the beginning of a rollout of Cantel AT&T Pay As You Go cellular service to more than 25 new markets in Canada. The markets include: Abbotsford, British Columbia; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Hamilton, Ontario; Quebec City, Quebec; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Fredericton, New Brunswick.

GERMANY

Mannesmann Arcor of Germany plans to license Architel Systems Corp.’s Automatic Service Activation Program for service activation of its voice and data services in a multivendor network environment. “Architel’s ASAP product meets our needs to deliver a bundled suite of services to our customers based on its ability to support convergent service activation,” said Reinhard Roth, chief information officer of Mannesmann Arcor.

GUATEMALA

The International Mobile Telecommunications Association said commercial trunked radio subscribers in Guatemala could number more than 200,000 by 2000, making it the largest trunked radio market in Central America. Licenses were auctioned there in June 1997, bringing in proceeds of about $3 million.

INDIA

Motorola India Ltd. established an 8,200-square foot technical training facility in Bangalore, India, to provide customers in Asia, India and the Middle East with advanced technical training. The training program will include theoretical and concept-oriented courses as well as practical exposure to Code Division Multiple Access and Global System for Mobile communications equipment, said Motorola Inc.

ITALY

Omnitel Pronto Italia reported net income of $132 million on revenues of $990.6 million during the first six months of 1998. This compares with a net loss of $97.56 million on revenues of $385.7 million for the same period last year. The company added 1.6 million subscribers during the first half of the year, and Omnitel’s total subscriber base reached 4 million on July 10, capturing a 40-percent share of the Italian cellular market. One in four Italian cellular subscribers now is an Omnitel customer, the company said.
