TEGIC LICENSES T9 TECHNOLOGY TO MOTOROLA

SEATTLE-Tegic Communications added Motorola Inc. to the growing list of companies licensed to use its T9 text-input technology in their wireless handsets.

Motorola initially plans to incorporate T9 technology into its integrated Digital Enhanced Network digital wireless handsets. T9 provides end users the ability to press just one key per letter to enter words quickly. It uses an intelligent software algorithm that scans a linguistic database to determine the correct word.

Motorola is considering incorporating the text-input systems in a variety of languages, including Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Korean (Hangul), Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish, said Tegic.

Tegic in June licensed Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V. to include the text-input system in its entire line of next-generation Global System for Mobile communications handsets. Tegic also earlier this year licensed Fujitsu Network Communications to use T9 technology in its Personna series of Code Division Multiple Access phones.

Tegic began licensing its T9 technology during the first quarter of 1997.
