Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. used the code-generation technology in Jerusalem-based Emultek Ltd.’s Rapid Plus software suite to build a fully functional Code Division Multiple Access cellular phone, said Emultek. The Rapid Plus solution is designed to reduce development costs and time to market of embedded products by creating a real-time simulation of the product on a computer.
Hong Kong
Northern Telecom Ltd. said a Hong Kong-based Global System for Mobile communications operator, called Sunday, signed a memorandum of understanding for Nortel to provide a two-year, $64 million network expansion. The MoU covers the addition of Nortel DMS-MSC digital switching systems that will increase Sunday’s network capacity to support up to 420,000 subscribers, said Nortel. Terms of the agreement also call for new base stations and intelligent network features.
Japan
DSP Communications Inc. said handset manufacturers using its cdmaOne chipsets began volume shipments of Code Division Multiple Access handsets to Japanese carriers. Kyocera Corp. recently announced it plans to supply handsets to DDI, which was the first Japanese carrier to activate a CDMA network July 14, said DSP.
Brazil
Lucent Technologies Inc. signed a $10 million contract to provide Code Division Multiple Access cell sites to Telesp, the Sao Paulo telephone company, in the cities of Presidente Prudente, Marilia and Bauru. The project is part of Telesp’s cellular system upgrade from analog to digital. The cell cites will bring CDMA service to about 40,000 subscribers, said Lucent.
Asia-Pacific
Microcell Connexions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Microcell Telecommunications Inc., announced several international roaming arrangements to increase its Global System for Mobile communications system’s reach. Microcell’s Canadian customers now can roam in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and New Zealand. With the recent agreements, the company has 34 international roaming agreements in 20 countries throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
