ERICSSON TO ACQUIRE ACC

STOCKHOLM, Sweden-L.M. Ericsson announced plans to acquire Advanced Computer Communication, a California-based vendor of remote access and internetworking products, for about $285 million in cash.

The purchase is congruent with Ericsson’s acquisition strategy focused on small- to medium-sized companies, and its focus on carrier-class solutions in data communications and Internet Protocol, the company said.

ACC’s management will remain in place when the transaction is completed, said Ericsson. Newbridge, the current majority owner, will continue to resell ACC products.

Ericsson said it plans to implement the Carrier Scale Internetworking program developed by Newbridge and others into ACC’s carrier-class access system.

“ACC is an excellent fit to the approach we want to take to datacoms, which emphasizes solutions, not boxes, and covers the entire network,” said Michael Thurk, executive vice president and general manager of Ericsson’s Datacom Networks and IP Services business unit. “ACC’s position creates a major opportunity for Ericsson to capture a significant part of the carrier-class remote access market.”
