STOCKHOLM, Sweden-L.M. Ericsson said it signed a contract valued at $85 million with Sichuan Post and Telecommunications Administration to expand the existing 900 MHz Global System for Mobile communications network in the Sichuan province of China.
The project, expected to be completed in April, includes the installation of mobile switch centers in 13 of the province’s 19 cities. Known as the GSM Phase Six Project, the expansion would increase network capacity to 620,000.
Sichuan PTA originally started its GSM network with equipment from a different supplier, but Ericsson replaced those systems in 14 of the 19 cities in early 1997, said Ericsson.
