HOLTSVILLE, N.Y.-Symbol Technologies Inc., which designs, manufactures and installs wireless local area network systems, bar-code systems and short-range wireless-connectivity products, today announced its support for and full participation in the development of the Bluetooth specification. Symbol is a member of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), originally founded by L.M. Ericsson, IBM Corp., Intel Corp., Nokia Corp. and Toshiba Corp.
“The Bluetooth short-range radio development provides simple and effective connectivity at a cost point that makes it the ideal technology for several applications which could not otherwise have justified the cost of a wireless LAN,” said Fred Heiman, executive vice president at Symbol. “We plan to include Bluetooth radios in many of our scanners and handheld computer products to enable communications with cellular phones, laptop computers, printers, handheld computers, [point-of-sale] registers and many other devices.”
“As the mobile-device market continues to grow, users are requiring a unified specification that allows various mobile technologies to communicate with one another,” said Anders Edlund, marketing manager, Short Link Technology, from Ericsson Mobile Communications A.B. “With Symbol Technologies joining the Bluetooth SIG, we welcome a new member with their expertise in developing wireless interoperability of barcode-reading scanners and handheld computers.”
