Nortel Networks Inc. announced it entered an alliance with Matsushita Communications Industrial Co. Ltd. to collaborate on wideband Code Division Multiple Access market development, including experimental network systems, services and terminals. The two plan to implement experimental access networks, conducting trials in North America, Europe and Asia, as part of the agreement’s first step. The companies hope to create mobile applications such as high bandwidth Internet access and mobile multimedia communications. Later steps in the agreement have Nortel working with Panasonic to jointly develop end-to-end solutions for voice and data applications for third-generation systems.

Corsair Communications Inc. introduced PhonePrint 5.0, a Year-2000 compliant software upgrade of its fraud-prevention system, which offers improvements to the graphical user interface, and system performance, infrastructure and operations, said Corsair. PhonePrint uses radio-frequency fingerprinting technology to authenticate legitimate customers and disconnect cloned cellular phones.

Frontier Cellular said it introduced a Code Division Multiple Access circuit-switched data service, called Data on the Run. The company said the service will allow users to access the Internet, check e-mail and obtain other information on wireless phones and laptop computers by connecting to a private intranet or public Internet. Lucent Technologies Inc. provided the infrastructure for the service.

WinStar Communications Inc. and Lucent Technologies Inc. announced they entered into a long-term strategic relationship to build out WinStar’s wireless broadband network, with Lucent providing the technology, network design, integration and buildout services and the majority of communications hardware and software. Under terms of the long-term agreement, Lucent also will provide up to $2 billion in equipment financing to fund the buildout.
