Paging Network Inc. announced it signed an agreement with SmartRoute Systems to offer SmartRoute’s real-time personalized traffic information system to paging subscribers. PageNet said it initially will roll out the SmartRoute service in eight markets, expanding to additional markets throughout next year.

Comverse Network Systems, an enhanced services platforms supplier, announced its new Distributed Prepaid Wireless service platform architecture. The system allows wireless network operators to reduce operation and transmission costs associated with the large-scale, high-volume call traffic of prepaid wireless services while providing ubiquitous access to their subscribers, said Comverse. The DPW system, which was developed by Comverse Network Systems’ Intelligent Network Division, is based on an architecture that allows platforms to be deployed in multiple sites throughout a country or region while managing the sites from a centralized facility.

Cellular One Kansas/Missouri said it is the first wireless service provider in the United States to offer Motorola Inc.’s StarTac phones in a dual-mode Code Division Multiple Access digital/cellular version. “This really is a unique occurrence for the Kansas City area,” said David Davis, vice president and general manager of the company. The handset weighs 3.7 ounces with an optional slim lithium-ion battery and provides talk times of between 90 minutes and 250 minutes and standby times between 40 hours and 120 hours. Cellular One is offering the phone for $500 on a month-to-month basis, $450 with a one-year contract and $400 with a two-year contract.

Wireless Services Corp. announced its GotSports personalized sports information service now is available via Internet e-mail, alphanumeric pagers and digital mobile phones. The service provides wireless subscribers with team information (such as a game’s starting lineups), weather conditions at the game and final scores. Users can customize the service by selecting the teams they wish to follow and the desired information, as well as the time of day they wish to receive the information.
