Alltel Corp. said it acquired Armstrong Cellular Inc.’s 15-percent interest in a network the two companies operate in Charleston, W.Va. Alltel now has 100 percent control of the operation. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The company also said last month it launched digital cellular service in southeastern Virginia; Greenville, S.C.; and the Triad area of North Carolina.
U.S. Wireless Corp. formed a joint venture agreement with Anam Instruments Inc. to create Wireless Technology Inc. as a jointly owned company. WTI, a Korean company, provides U.S. Wireless with an Asian partner to manufacture, market and distribute the company’s RadioCamera wireless caller location system. The joint venture establishes a two-phase initial funding for operations totalling $3.5 million.
The European Commission authorized Telecom Italia, together with the Spanish electricity groups Endesa and Union Fenosa, to jointly acquire control of Retevision Movil S.A., which will become Spain’s third mobile operator. The network will be based on DCS 1800 technology, said the commission.
Ventera Corp. announced it has completed a fully integrated site/tower management applications called MetroSites for Metrocall Inc. The Internet-based system captures, tracks and reports all critical engineering data, Federal Communications Commission licensing data and lease information on all Metrocall-owned tower sites.
Tegic Communications Inc. announced it signed a licensing agreement with Maxon Electronics Co. Ltd. granting Maxon the license to add Tegic’s T9 text input to its cellular handsets. Maxon said it will use the license to include Chinese character-based and English versions of the T9 input solution for its Global System for Mobile communications handsets, set to be available next year.
