PAGEMART, MOTOROLA SIGN WITH MONITEL ON REMOTE MONITORING

CEDAR KNOLLS, N.J.-PageMart Wireless Inc. and Motorola Inc. have signed strategic alliance agreements with Monitel Products Corp. to provide various aspects of a two-way wireless remote monitoring system.

Monitel provides remote monitoring systems to the imaging industry, for products including photocopiers, printers, fax machines and printers. Its system allows these machines to communicate with a remote host computer and send meter and diagnostic information.

According to the strategic alliances, Motorola will supply the company with ReFLEX two-way paging equipment to extend to the system wireless capabilities. Once wireless, the system will use PageMart’s Internet Protocol advanced messaging network to transmit data.

PageMart recently created the Telemetry Strategic Business Unit to meet the special needs of non-traditional paging contracts such as this. John Beletic, PageMart chairman and chief executive officer, has stated in the past his belief that the market for paging will increasingly become machine-to-machine communications.

Minolta Corp. is a primary user of Monitel’s products and is expected to benefit particularly from the wireless solution, Monitel said. “The elimination of the dependency on telephone lines is clearly a major advance for our business,” said John Reilly, national marketing manager for Minolta’s Office Systems Sales/Marketing Division.
