WASHINGTON-U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky last week demanded that Mexico live up to World Trade Organization commitments to liberalize its telecommunications market.
“We urge Mexican authorities to take immediate measures that will benefit consumers and service providers in both our countries,” said Barshefsky. “We also urge Mexico to comply fully with all WTO obligations in this vital sector.”
USTR is most concerned with costs of long-distance international calls and interconnection rates, which Barshefsky implied were not market-based. It is unclear to what extent, if any, Mexico’s telecom policies at issue have impacted wireless communications within the country and between the United States and Mexico.
