STOCKHOLM, Sweden-L.M. Ericsson and Powertel Inc. said they will conduct trials of
Ericsson’s “GSM on the Net” solution, which provides business communication services over an integrated
Global System for Mobile communications-Internet Protocol network.
Powertel began installing GSM on the Net in
December at its West Point, Ga., headquarters, where the first test call was made successfully Dec. 15., said Ericsson.
The system also will be connected to the Ericsson office in West Point to test communications over a broader wide area
network.
GSM on the Net uses small radio base stations to add local area GSM coverage to office local area
networks. Subscribers can use a variety of terminals, including GSM phones, personal communications service phones,
multimedia terminals and fixed IP phones, with no or low call charges for internal calls, said Ericsson.
