A recent survey by the Lucas Group found that telecom professionals are looking for more balance
between their work and home life.
“The top reason candidates seek a job change is a desire for more balance
between personal and professional demands,” Lucas said.
“With unemployment reaching record lows,
employers are trying to find ways to distinguish their companies from their competition to attract better-qualified
candidates,” said Cathryn deMartino, vice president of Lucas Group’s executive search division. “Benefits
and flexibility related to family issues may provide the differentiating factors many candidates seek.”
Lest
employers get too giddy, more money is still the second most popular reason to switch jobs. In third place is new
employment because the person is moving to a new area.
Employees also increasingly are asking for sign-on
bonuses and other perks, Lucas said.
In the wireless industry, perks must vary depending on the employment
position one holds. But I imagine these perks would entice qualified candidates to your firm:
1. Perk for
marketing communications managers-Do not have to come up with new creative name for carrier’s one-rate plan. (All
the variations have been done.)
2. Perk for build-to-suit executive-Do not have to listen to local planning
commissions try to get around federal law or try to make extra money off the company you represent. You may still
have to explain federal law, but don’t have to listen to the local board.
3. Perk for journalists-Do not have to spell
out acronyms on first reference. PCS will be just that, PCS.
4. Perk for public relations executives-Client promises
not to change mind about making appointments at major trade show in the three weeks preceding said trade show.
5.
Perk for chief operating officers-Do not have to explain to Wall Street analysts changes in strategy, subscriber number
shortfalls, revenue shortfalls or reason for accounting changes.
6. Perk for engineers-Gee, you people are already so
valued, I assume you already have all your perks.
