WASHINGTON-Americans who use wireless phones can vote for them to be on a stamp. The Postal Service was set to begin accepting votes for its “Celebrate the Century” stamp collection on Saturday.
Wireless phones are nominated for the lifestyle category for the 1990s. “We have constantly said that wireless phones have changed lives. This would put a stamp on it and make it official,” said Thomas Wheeler, president of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association.
Noting the popularity of coffee is also a nominee for this category, Wheeler added, “We started the decade with 3.5 million subscribers. We will end the decade with 80 million. Even Starbucks hasn’t grown that fast.”
Other nominees in the lifestyle category are museum attendance, home offices, sport utility vehicles and community service. Other categories include people and events, arts and entertainment, sports, and science and technology.
The post office is highlighting each decade of the 20th Century with a set of stamps. Once voting is completed at the end of this month, the ’90s stamps will be available in April 2000. Stamps for the 1900s, 1910s, 1920s, 1930s and 1940s are available at all post offices. The 1950s stamp is set to be issued on May 26, the 1960s in August, the 1970s in November and the 1980s in January.
Ballots will be available at post offices across the country and via the Internet at http: stampvote.msn.com.
