INDUSTRY REQUESTS ADDITIONAL STAY IN CALEA LAWSUIT

WASHINGTON-The wireless industry has asked a federal court to grant an additional 60-day stay of a lawsuit regarding implementation of the digital wiretap act.

The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, the Personal Communications Industry Association and the Telecommunications Industry Association are suing the Department of Justice and the FBI.

The request extends a previous 60-day stay granted in April. The delay is meant to give the Justice Department time to continue its negotiations with manufacturers over a software solution for implementing the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act of 1994. The stay puts on hold for now any litigation, said Al Gidari, an attorney for the trade associations.

The original stay would have expired June 1, so the industry on May 28 asked for more time to continue negotiations. According to the industry associations, the DOJ and the FBI do not oppose the extension.
