WASHINGTON-Congress sent the White House a bill on Thursday designed to limit liability stemming from the onset of the millennium bug. President Clinton is expected to sign the measure.
The Personal Communications Industry Association hailed the bill’s passage as a “victory for the wireless industry and a victory for consumers.
“We are pleased that after weeks of negotiations, the House, the Senate and the White House were able to find common ground and agree on a Y2K bill,” said PCIA President Jay Kitchen.
The White House reluctantly agreed to sign the bill after intense negotiations. In a letter to Congress, White House Chief of Staff John Podesta said the Clinton administration was only agreeing to the bill because the changing of the calendar to a new millennium was “unique and unprecedented.” Podesta warned the White House would not be as kind to other product liability legislation.
