SENATE BILL REQUIRES FIXED BUILDING ACCESS

WASHINGTON-Four members of the Senate Commerce Committee have introduced legislation to require all federal agencies to be located in buildings with access to competitive telecommunications. The legislation is intended to help fixed wireless companies, which require rooftop access.

The legislation was proposed by Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) and Sens. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), Ernest Hollings (D-S.C.) and Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.).

If the new bill passes, landlords will be required to commit in the leasing contract that access is given to all telecommunications carriers, including fixed wireless carriers.

States like Texas and Connecticut already have such rules, and landlords in those states-or states with similar rules-will only be required to certify they are already following the state rules rather than amending a lease contract.
