DIGITAL PHONE SALES BOOST TI’S EARNINGS

DALLAS-Texas Instruments, Dallas, announced July 20 earnings per share of 92 cents for the second quarter, a dramatic 163-percent increase from the year-ago quarter. Revenues for the latest complete quarter were $2.35 billion, an 8-percent rise from the same period in 1998.

“TI has raised its estimate for industry sales of digital (wireless) phones to 245 million units from 230 million,” the company said in the outlook portion of its earnings release.

TI expects “the wireless market … to continue to be strong, driven by an increase in new subscribers and replacement rates.”
