NAPERVILLE, Ill.-Spyglass Inc. said it licensed its Spyglass Prism product to Seiko Epson for use with a new wireless device specifically designed to target the Japanese market.
Spyglass Prism is an Internet content delivery platform that acts as a proxy server, which identifies the device calling up information and optimizes the data from its source before delivering it to the device.
Each Seiko unit will serve as a cellular phone, but also will include additions, such as a Web browser, information directory, driving direction service and other personal applications, said the company.
In order to add value to the device, Seiko Epson also is rolling out its own global positioning system network, said Spyglass. The company’s Prism product will work in conjunction with the device and the service to deliver content that has been adapted specifically to display information quickly and appropriately on the handheld device, said the company. For example, Spyglass Prism will condition and resize the map image data that is sent to the GPS function, thus reducing the bandwidth requirements of the network and making detailed maps legible on the small screen devices.
“In order for a wireless device to be widely accepted by Japanese consumers, it needs to be a turnkey solution with access to the Internet and to other services built into the device,” said Kesamitsu Koiki, Seiko Epson’s general manager. “To make that access as useful as possible to our customers, we will be using Spyglass Prism to deliver content that is appropriately formatted for our handheld device.”
