ATIS TO DEVELOP STANDARDS FOR WIRELESS FIXED ACCESS

WASHINGTON-A standards subcommittee of the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions plans to create a new working group to develop standards for fixed-access solutions.

The Standards Committee T1’s Technical Subcommittee for Wireless/Mobile Services and Systems, sponsored by the ATIS, approved forming the group-T1P1.4-which will develop standards for fixed-access solutions that interface with switched telephone networks and public packet data networks.

T1P1.4 will focus on developing wireless standards that support services such as conventional telephony, including existing voiceband modem and fax; basic-rate integrated services digital networks; fractional T1/E1 leased line; leased line data; and packet data for Internet access, said ATIS.

The working group’s scope includes standardization on the performance, compatibility and interoperability of fixed-wireless point-to-multipoint access systems operating in licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

Standards developed by T1P1.4 will specify common air-interface standards and minimum performance standards for base stations and subscriber radio transceivers, said ATIS. The primary goal is feature transparency and interoperability with existing public networks for seamless interworking.

The standards are most applicable to equipment manufacturers that want to enter new markets and incumbent local exchange carriers that need more alternatives to connect to a customer’s premises, ATIS said.
