TELSTRA LAUNCHES CDMAONE SERVICE

COSTA MESA, Calif.-Telstra in Australia formally launched cdmaOne service in Sydney and Melbourne, with plans to launch in Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Canberra next month, said the CDMA Development Group.

The launch of the $379.5 million network comes ahead of the closure of the country’s analog mobile network, which is scheduled to shut down later this year. The network is expected to reach 95 percent of the Australian population and offer both voice and data applications, said CDG.

Telstra also announced the opening of its Global Operations Center in Melbourne, which brings together more than 700 people, who will centrally manage Telstra’s national, international and offshore networks.

Gerry Moriarty, Telstra’s group managing director of the Network & Technology Group, said the company has installed one of the world’s largest digital video walls to enable staff to monitor the network and manage flow of customer traffic.

“This ensures that faults are detected and repaired quickly, that network congestion is minimized and that the potential risk of major equipment problems are eliminated,” said Moriarty.

“The center also will provide a unique opportunity for the integration of future technologies such as those using Internet Protocol and our new Data Mode Operation next-generation infrastructure,” he said.
