RAILROAD ASSOCIATION ASKS REGULATORS TO LIFT LICENSE FREEZE

WASHINGTON-The Association of American Railroads again urged federal regulators to lift the licensing freeze on private multiple address system applications and not auction fixed wireless frequencies internally used by railroads, pipelines, utilities and other industries that support critical U.S. infrastructure.

In Sept. 17 comments filed with the Federal Communications Commission, AAR also said it opposed geographic licensing of private MAS systems.

The FCC is crafting rules that contemplate auctioning MAS frequencies as part of the implementation of a 1997 law that expanded auctions to some-but not all-private wireless spectrum.

“Because of this freeze, ongoing projects to upgrade switching and signaling systems that control stretches of railroad have been halted,” said AAR.
