GENEVA-Sun Microsystems Inc. announced three manufacturers of Global System for Mobile communications handsets have agreed to incorporate Java technology in their products.
First, Motorola Inc. plans to launch the Timeport P10888 smart phone with Java technology in Europe in the second quarter. Also, Sony Corp. intends to cooperate with Credit Suisse to demonstrate an end-to-end service delivery model over a GSM network using Java. Finally, the Symbian special interest group will use Java as a core component of its smart-phone offering, expected in the first half of next year.
The Timeport phone will have both Hypertext Markup Language and Wireless Application Protocol microbrowsers and TrueSync synchronization technology.
Sun said it plans to launch a project to develop an end-to-end service delivery model based on Java, built on a standard Sony GSM phone. Demonstrated at Telecom ’99, the phone receives and runs Credit Suisse online banking applications downloaded through an existing GSM network, the company said.
