NORMAN, Okla.-The Center for the Study of Wireless Electromagnetic Compatibility said it will conduct research to determine whether mobile phones can interfere with aircraft navigation systems or ignite gasoline fumes at gas pumps.
“To date, there are not confirmed reports of phones causing any type of explosions, but clearly this issue needs to be investigated,” said Hank Grant, director of the University of Oklahoma research body.
In recent months, several major oil companies have begun posting signs at gas stations advising drivers to turn off mobile phones while fueling their vehicles.
The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association has criticized petroleum companies for issuing the warnings, saying they perpetuate what CTIA calls “urban legend.”
The Center for the Study of Wireless Electromagnetic Compatibility did not identify who is funding the research.
