London Underground to replace radio system

LONDON-London Underground Ltd. awarded a contract to CityLink Telecommunications Ltd. to replace and manage the radio and transmission services for the London Underground transportation system.

Under a private finance initiative known as Connect-worth $1.9 billion over 20 years-London Underground will procure a terrestrial trunked radio system to provide mobile communications to trains, stations and depots across the underground. The new communications system also includes an optical-fiber, high-speed transmission network.

The consortium said the enhanced communications will result in operational efficiencies, fewer delays and enhanced emergency response when services are disrupted.

The CityLink consortium is comprised of Racal Services Ltd., Hyder Investments Ltd., Charterhouse Project Equity Investments Ltd., Fluor International Ltd. and Motorola Ltd. CityLink raised about $567 million in private capital and will manage all aspects of Connect.

Racal Translink is responsible for network operations over the life of the contract. Fluor Global Services has responsibility for the four-year new build program. Fluor awarded subcontracts to Motorola to provide the TETRA-based digital radio system and Racal Translink, which will design and supply the transmission network.
