Brazil considers PCS license sale

BRASILIA, Brazil-Anatel, Brazil’s telecommunications regulatory agency, was planning to hold a public hearing to discuss terms for the sale of a round of personal communications services licenses. The licenses are scheduled to be auctioned in March or April.

Industry reports have said the concessions could bring up to $5 billion.

Last year the government split Telebras, the country’s telephone monopoly, into 12 different companies, including eight privatized cellular operators. The government also sold 10 additional competing cellular licenses, raising close to $14 billion.

The PCS licensees would compete with existing cellular carriers.
