Telephia analyzes market quality

SAN FRANCISCO-Telephia Inc. released its Net-Q results for the New York, Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, Denver, Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Portland, Ore., markets.

Net-Q is an independent measurement method that gauges coverage, dropped calls, blocked calls, audio quality and systems access for all competing wireless carriers within a market.

In the Washington, D.C., market, Telephia said it conducted tests on the AT&T Wireless Services Inc., Bell Atlantic Mobile, Cellular One, Nextel Communications Inc. and Sprint PCS networks.

For this market, no digital access technology came out as the clear favorite in audio quality in the drive tests.

Sprint PCS and AT&T Wireless led in audio quality satisfaction, according to Telephia’s Wireless E-Trac survey.

All the carriers had outstanding coverage in the Washington market, although Bell Atlantic, Sprint PCS and AT&T Wireless were perceived as having the best coverage.

Cellular One and Bell Atlantic had the fewest incidences of dropped calls.

The results were from a combination of tests conducted during a two-week period in which 1,000 two-minute cellular phone calls were placed on each of the carrier’s networks.

The test area covered approximately 1,700 miles in the Washington metropolitan area, which was broken down into four zones.

The Net-Q data also included Wireless E-Trac survey results of more than 2,500 wireless phone subscribers on their perception of local network quality, Telephia said.
