Libris completes software prototype.

Libris changed to Unwired Planet. Commercial release of first generation UP.Link Server and UP.Browser software.

June

Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and Unwired Planet agree to collaborate and create WAP.

WAP architecture published on Web.1998

Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and Unwired Planet create WAP Forum, open membership.

WAP 1.0 specifications published on Web.

Unwired Planet changes name to Phone.com.

Microsoft joins forum.

WAP forum surpasses 100 members.

WAP version 1.1 released.

Phone.com commences with initial public offering.

Forum reaches 180 members.

Phone.com buys WAP infrastructure provider APiON.

WAP Forum surpasses 250 members. Introduces WAP 2.0.

Microsoft releases Mobile Internet Explorer, a dual-mode microbrowser supporting both WAP and HTML. Ericsson first to license the new microbrowser.
