Carriers should double-check Y2K compliance

WASHINGTON-Wireless telecommunications carriers that long ago declared they were year-2000 compliant should check again with manufacturers and vendors since some supposed-compliant items have since been found to have glitches, said the President’s Y2K czar.

“When you think you are done, you are never done. Those who finished their upgrades [last summer] but didn’t keep up with upgrades or fixes, you are not done,” said John Koskinen, chairman of the President’s Council on Year 2000 Conversion.

Koskinen spoke on Tuesday to the National Press Club in a speech designed to prepare people for the minor glitches that are expected to occur when two-field date codes may interpret the day Jan. 1, 2000, as 1900, and shut down or work improperly.
