Hong Kong mobile telephone operator SmarTone Communications said it is looking to secure a wireless fixed network license in Hong Kong. SmarTone is among 14 companies that have applied to the Hong Kong government for wireless local fixed telephone network licenses. SmarTone is beginning the second phase of technology and application local multipoint distribution system trials. The company said it plans to spend US$600 million to US$700 million on the proposed fixed wireless network and expansions to its cellular network.

In addition, Australian company Davnet was granted approval by the Chinese government to test a wireless local fixed telephone network. Davnet applied for a wireless fixed license through its 75-percent owned joint venture company Davnet Digitel Hong Kong.
