ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola Inc.’s Network Solutions Sector announced a successful launch in Japan of its commercial high-speed wireless Internet access for cdmaOne networks.
The new service, deployed by DDI Corp. and IDO Corp., allows subscribers to access the Internet at speeds up to 64 kilobits per second, which Motorola claims is the fastest cellular phone data transmission service available.
“No other commercial cellular system in Japan can match these data rates, which rival ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) for wireless users,” said Satoshi Nakagawa, president of IDO Corp. “The rapid growth of Internet and data services is now shifting to wireless, and we will continue to provide our customers with all the benefits from this trend.”
Motorola said its Internet access service is the first to offer packet data implementation that provides the operator with the “dormant mode” feature, which automatically releases radio frequency and voice and data channel resources not in use to transfer data between the subscriber and the network. Motorola claims this feature ensures the most efficient use of the available RF spectrum, which allows the consumer to benefit by being billed only for the active portion of packet data calls.
