Agilent Technologies Inc. introduced a number of new test-solution products and made improvements to others. The Agilent 84000 RFIC series model A20E is a low-cost test solution developed specifically for high-volume semiconductor manufacturers that make radio-frequency power-amplifier integrated circuits used in cell phones and other wireless devices. Agilent also introduced firmware enhancements to its mobile manufacturing test sets that test the latest generation of Code Division Multiple Access mobile phones with the TIA/EIA-95-B protocol. The enhancements, to the E8285A, 8924C and 8924E station sets, support the new, dynamic pilot thresholds; smaller closed-loop power control step sizes; new access channel procedures; and interband handoff support between personal communications services and cellular networks in CDMA mode. The company also announced that cdmaOne and Global System for Mobile communications measurement features have been added as options for the Agilent ESA-E series portable spectrum analyzers. Motorola

Motorola Inc. and Mercedes-Benz USA have teamed to offer U.S. drivers the first fully integrated digital cellular phone system. The system uses Motorola’s dual-mode digital/analog StarTac wireless phone and will be available on all model-year 2000 Mercedes-Benz cars. The integration allows users to upload phone book and other data automatically into the vehicle’s auto system display. Drivers can also make calls using the in-dash display and steering wheel controls, which are fully synchronized with the phone. The integrated radio feature automatically mutes the radio or pauses the compact disc or cassette player when a call comes in. And on some Mercedes-Benz models, phone calls can be managed through simple verbal commands through the vehicle speakers and integrated microphones. When connected to the vehicle, the phone uses the external vehicle antenna for stronger signaling and better reception. Richard Hirschmann of America

Richard Hirschmann of America Inc. introduced the MCA 1890 SF Bumper-Concealed Dual-Band wireless phone antenna. The new antenna operates on wireless phone bands from 824 MHz through 1950 MHz, with gain characteristics of 2 dB to 3 dB. With the release of its Aditus SI2000 digital switching platform, Adicom Wireless Inc. hopes to provide a total solution offering for network operators around the world. RF Micro Devices Inc. has developed a new broadband linear amplifier designed specifically for digital communications systems. The RF2351 has a frequency range of 1710 MHz to 1910 MHz and is suitable for use in Code Division Multiple Access or Time Division Multiple Access systems in the personal communications services band. Manufactured using an advanced gallium arsenide process technology, the RF2351 is also suitable for Global System for Mobile communications networks, wireless local loop systems and wideband CDMA systems. Symbol Technologies Inc. introduced a mobile computer appliance family that integrates 11 Megabits per second high-rate wireless local area network data communications. The new family of Spectrum24 11 Mbps-enabled computer appliances are designed to comply with IEEE 802.11b industry standards. The PDT 6146 is designed for a wide range of industrial applications and is available in multiple keypad and character display configurations. The PDT 6846 is intended for scan-sensitive applications and harsh environments. The PDT 7546 features the Windows CE operating system and is a lightweight handheld computer that can handle temperatures ranging from minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Synchrologic said iMobile File Distribution can load files residing on a corporate network automatically to the target mobile worker when they synchronize through iMobile Connect, the one-tap connection interface that triggers all iMobile Suite updates. W-Trade Technologies

W-Trade Technologies released a comprehensive suite of wireless financial applications. Ericsson Inc. plans to incorporate Extended Systems’ data synchronization and management software into its R320, a dual-band mobile phone with Wireless Application Protocol functionality. The software, called XTNDConnect PC, supports synchronization of applications, including Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, Lotus Organizer, Symantec’s Act!, NetManage Ecco Pro and Goldmine, with Palm Computing, Windows CE and Ericsson mobile devices. Motorola

Scientists at Motorola Labs and Los Alamos National Laboratory have developed a new, miniature fuel cell that has 10 times the energy density of conventional rechargeable batteries, but is smaller and lighter. The cells, measuring about one-inch square and less than one-tenth of an inch thick, could safely power a cellular phone for more than a month and eliminate the need for battery chargers and AC adapters. According to Motorola, the fuel cells use a reservoir of inexpensive methanol that, when combined with the oxygen in the air, produces electricity. Since fuel cells have low voltage outputs, Motorola has designed unique circuitry that efficiently increases the voltage required to replace conventional batteries and directly drive portable electronics. Certicom

Certicom Corp. introduced three new products to help manufacturers prevent fraudulent wireless users. Certicom’s MobileTrust is a digital certificate service that allows handheld computing devices to perform secure stock trades, online banking, e-mail and other business over secure wireless connections. The company said MobileTrust is the only standards-based digital certificate service capable of supporting client authentication and privacy for mobile business and e-commerce applications. For original equipment manufacturers, Certicom introduced its Trustpoint Public-Key Infrastructer product line for mobile e-business security. the Trustpoint system allows manufacturers to develop applications with customized certificate-based security integrated into the applications. With the introduction of the Smart Card Developer’s Toolkit, Certicom provides developers with a comprehensive set of tools to implement elliptic curve cryptography smart card-based solutions. AlphaServe.com

AlphaServ.com’s AlphaConnect Internet division developed a Network Query Language leveraging the mobility of the Palm VII wireless personal digital assistant from Palm Computing. According to AlphaServe.com, the language can be used to create and deploy intelligent agent-based applications from a Palm VII device. The agents are capable of retrieving information from Web sites, completing forms and performing transactions. Analog Devices

Analog Devices Inc. announced its first product offering to include a processor core licensed from ARM Ltd. The AD20msp430 SoftFone chipset, a next-generation Global System for Mobile communications baseband chipset, is based on an ARM7TDMI core, which allows designers to build applications that can accommodate 2.5-generation wireless data communication standards that are also forward-compatible with future 3G cellular standards. Motorola

Motorola Inc. introduced the Motorola Messaging Server 2.1 software suite, an upgrade of advanced wireless messaging applications for the PageWriter 2000X, Timeport P930 and Timeport P935 pager models. The upgrade adds a new third-party development environment with a software developer’s kit to create personalized mobile messaging client/server applications. It also includes support for IMAP-4, MAPI and POP3 e-mail systems with encryption and linkage to the Internet, intranets, legacy systems and fax machines. e-SIM

e-SIM released its WAP Browser Component, which it said allows manufacturers to integrate Phone.com Inc.’s Wireless Application Protocol browser with applications by using its RapidPLUS software. RapidPLUS, with e-SIM’s WAP Browser Component, allows phone manufacturers to create a virtual simulation of their WAP product on a computer before embedding it into the actual product, the company said. Texas Instruments Inc. unveiled a new bipolar Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (BiCMOS) process geared for the wireless telecommunications industry. Phillips Speech Processing and Preferred Voice

Philips Speech Processing and Preferred Voice Inc. announced a new technology that allows natural speech recognition to operate software applications. The application uses the proprietary Voice Integrated Platform Service developed by Preferred Voice and Philips SpeechPearl99 natural dialogue speech-recognition platform to access Speech InfoNet, the Voice Accessed Content service. The content for the new service would be provided by choicecontent.com, which offers content news and information audio clips from its Internet information network. Telenetics Corp. introduced an advanced version of its Omega wireless cellular automatic meter-reading system. Lucent Technologies

Lucent Technologies Inc.’s Microelectronics Group unveiled a high-performance silicon-germanium integrated circuit technology for network transport and wireless communications applications. The new technology, developed by Bell Labs, features bipolar NPN transistors with cut-off frequencies higher than 70 GHz. Lucent said it is initially targeting the technology at 10 gigabits per second SONET/SDH applications, where most high-speed IC’s are fabricated in a more expensive gallium arsenide technology. Qualcomm

Qualcomm Inc. reported the early shipment of its new tri-mode software for the sixth-generation MSM3100 mobile station modem solution. It was slated to ship in the first quarter of next year. The software supports automatic Code Division Multiple Access/FM wireless operation for 800 MHz CDMA, 1900 MHz CDMA and personal communications services and 800 MHz analog technologies in a single handset. The Model 4300 enables more thorough testing via computer-guided remote control, manual verification and autorun test sequences. The Model 4300 also enables future upgrades by downloads from the Web and offers twice as much memory as previous testers. The company also announced its OPTIMLine of products designed to improve call completion, lower dropped-call rates and soft handoffs and increase capacity for CDMA networks. The OPTIMRight 8130 is a portable instrument for diagnosing CDMA networks, capturing handoff status, monitoring radio-frequency power control and verifying coverage.
