SigmaOne Communications Corp., a provider of location systems and services for wireless carriers and the wireless Internet, reported the development of the company’s wireless location system for Global System for Mobile communications carriers in the United States and Europe. Analog Devices Inc. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. of Japan announced the development of a radio chip for use in third-generation cellular phones. The direct-conversion radio chip eliminates the intermediate frequency section of traditional radio technologies and enables radio designers to take a high frequency or radio frequency input signal directly to baseband or low frequencies, eliminating components and boosting efficiency. Nokia Corp. introduced the Nokia Inductive Loopset wireless accessory designed for the hard-of-hearing. The device is compatible with the 8890 and 8860 wireless phones. It is worn around the neck and attaches to the headset jack of the phones, shutting off the microphone of a hearing aid and using it to convert the magnetic energy impulses emitted by the Loopset into sound. Garmin International Inc. has entered the wireless market with NavTalk, an integrated-technology product combining electronic mapping and global positioning system technology into one cellular device. NavTalk includes all the functions of a cell phone combined with a 12-channel GPS receiver that can lock onto satellite signals, providing precise positioning throughout the United States, Canada and South America. Garmin also said NavTalk is completely waterproof to one meter for up to 30 minutes. For a nominal monthly fee, NavTalk users can choose to subscribe to a roadside assistance service that will be on-call to receive distress messages from the user as part of the one-button emergency activation feature. Garmin also announced that for a monthly service charge, Main Course Technologies offers a way to track an unlimited number of NavTalk’s through the Internet for fleet-tracking services. Motorola Inc. reported the availability of the FLEX Generation II decoding solution, a new implementation of the FLEX G1.9 protocol, enabling original equipment manufacturer to create devices that integrate high speed wireless messaging based on the FLEX G1.9 protocol. The Generation II solution is implemented by a FLEX Application Specific Integrated Circuit working with FLEXstack V4.2 software and will be available in 8-, 16- or 32-bit microprocessor formats.
