MEXICO CITY-Leap Wireless International announced an agreement between its Mexican wireless service provider, Pegaso PCS, and Sprint PCS that will allow cross-border services and an alignment between the two Code Division Multiple Access carriers. Sprint will invest $200 million in the Mexican company.
The agreement is the first international affiliation for Sprint PCS and includes a governance role for Sprint PCS on Pegaso’s governing board.
Pegaso offers personal communications services in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Tijuana. The companies will offer cross-border roaming services, providing customers service in major cities of both countries.
Pegaso is 51-percent owned by Grupo Pegaso (33.5 percent) and Mexican broadcaster Grupo Televisa (17.5 percent). Leap Wireless owns 28.6 percent of Pegaso, and Citicorp owns 13.5 percent.
